Purpose FAQ

2007 Coleman Everest 5.5 Challenge Privacy Policy

The Coleman Company, Inc. and PE Central (pecentral.org) have created this privacy statement for the Coleman Everest 5.5 Challenge Web site (http://colemaneverest.pecentral.org) to demonstrate our firm commitment to privacy. The following discloses the information gathering and dissemination practices for the Coleman Everest 5.5 Challenge Web Site, which is housed at PE Central, the leading online resource provider for K-12 health and physical education teachers.

Purpose of the Site

The purpose of the Coleman Everest 5.5 Challenge Web site is to encourage children and adolescents (starting at grades 4/5) to become physically active by providing them with a fun and educational Web site that encourages them to record and track their physical activity in minutes and/or steps while striving to virtually reach the Summit of Mount Everest. Each time they complete a progress segment (i.e., 60 minutes of accumulated physical activity in one day) they will have the opportunity to discover interesting facts about the location of that segment. The site has been designed for use by those within the U.S. only.

Intended Audience

The Coleman Everest 5.5 Challenge Site is designed for teachers to use with their students. We strongly encourage teachers to review the site and its features first (click on Preview from the front page of site), before including it as part of their curriculum. We also encourage teachers to review the Internet agreement statements that were signed at the beginning of the year by parents at their school. Students and individuals, however, may also use the site as a personal activity log even if they are not associated with a school or class. Teachers, please check to see if there are students who have not received permission from their parents to use the Internet for educational programs like this one. Many schools send this form home at the beginning of the school year and keep the signed forms on file.

Children Under the Age of 13 Whose School Is not Registered

To comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) we require that children under 13 years of age obtain parental permission before participating in the activities on the Coleman Everest 5.5 Challenge Web site if their school has not been registered by one of their teachers. When a child under the age of 13 wishes to register on the site he/she will be asked to provide a parent/guardian’s email address so that we may contact them to obtain consent for their child to participate. If the student has registered through his or her teacher, permission from a parent or guardian is not requested.

Teacher Consent

Teachers choosing to register their school and classes will first be informed of the privacy policies this site [colemaneverest.pecentral.org] follows. COPPA policy allows teachers to give permission to students to use an instructional Web site. Teachers will provide consent by agreeing to this information as part of the registration process. Teachers not agreeing to this consent form will not be able to complete registration for their school or classes.

How We Use This Information

All personal information gathered from student registrants is held in strict confidence by PE Central and is not shared with anyone, including The Coleman Company, Inc. All of this information is password protected. Teachers have the ability to access and change the information they entered during the initial registration phase. They also can change student passwords via their protected account. All information for teachers, students and individuals is accessible only through the use of unique user names and passwords, which requires registration. Representatives from PE Central do access student account information. This is for troubleshooting and technical support requested by teachers and/or parents.

Teachers who sign up consent to being contacted by The Coleman Company, Inc. in the future for education purposes.

To help personalize the site for registered students, we display the student’s Username and Class Name while he or she is navigating the site. Other students cannot see any other student’s registration information or physical activity logs.

For teachers, we collect school postal addresses, e-mail addresses, phone numbers, etc. for the purposes of troubleshooting site functionality problems and for the mailing of incentives that are associated with the site (e.g. souvenirs for top schools and prize incentives for the first 55 teachers who sign up, register their schools, and have 10 students register). We ask for the birth date of teacher registrants as that determines who can register a school. Anyone under the age of 18 is not allowed to register a school.

Electronically Collected Information: Use of Cookies and IP Addresses (Passive Data Collection)

While users are on the Coleman Everest 5.5 Challenge Web site we do use cookies* (see definition at bottom) to track the number of visitors and obtain other types of non-personally identifiable information such as number of unique visitors, visitor sessions, hits, page views, etc. In addition, we collect and store: the name of the domain and host from which individuals access the Internet (for example, aol.com or princeton.edu); the Internet protocol (IP) address of the computer individuals are using; the browser software used and the operating system; the date and time the Web site was accessed; and the Internet address of the Web site from which the individual linked directly to (colemaneverest.pecentral.org).

We do not use this technology to collect any personal information about the visitors. We use the information to measure the number of visitors to the different sections of the Coleman Everest 5.5 Challenge Web site, and to help us make the site more useful. This information is shared with The Coleman Company, Inc., used in marketing literature, and used in reports and presentations.

How We Use the Data that is Collected via the Coleman Everest 5.5 Challenge Web Site Online Tracking Tool

The primary function of the Coleman Everest 5.5 Challenge Web site is to encourage students to log their physical activities in an online environment for 30 days. Therefore, we track and record the minutes of activity per type of activity and/or the number of steps that a person enters. We compile these data into a report for research and reporting purposes. When these data are reported, no identifying names for individuals, schools or businesses are used. If data from an individual school or class is used in a report, a pseudonym is created so as to avoid that school or class from being identified.

Teachers are allowed to view their individual students' progress, class and school reports via the Web site using their teacher username and password. Teachers can view a report indicating how many of their students have reached the summit of Mount Everest. Teachers can also view a roster of their students and change their passwords.

The Coleman Everest 5.5 Challenge Results

The Coleman Everest 5.5 Challenge recognizes those who participate to the highest extent. All students and individuals who complete the Challenge and reach the summit will be able to print a congratulatory personalized certificate commemorating their achievement.

In addition, the most physically active schools (of those with 50 or more students registered for the Challenge) will be identified by dividing the total number of students at the school who are registered for the Challenge by the number who complete the entire Everest hike. The Coleman Company, Inc. will provide souvenirs from Mike’s Everest Expedition to all schools with 100 percent participation-to-completion ratios and – while supplies last – to other top schools in order of completion results. Coleman will seek written permission to post the name, city and state of the top-finishing schools on the Coleman Everest 5.5 Challenge Web site after the end of the 30-day contest, and to use the schools’ names in any other advertising or marketing.

As an added incentive, Coleman will send a $50 gift card redeemable at Coleman.com to the first 55 teachers to sign up, register their school and have at least 10 students complete the student registration.

Participation is Free

Teachers, children or individuals do not have to purchase any products to be able to register and use the Coleman Everest 5.5 Challenge Web site.

Parental Rights

Upon request, parents can review the child’s personal information that was collected by the Coleman Everest 5.5 Challenge Web Site. Parents can have their child’s personal information deleted and can refuse to allow further collection or use of the child’s information. Parents are encouraged to use their child’s username and password to review the available postings if there are questions. If parents wish, please contact us by email (peceverest@pecentral.org) or phone (540-953-1043). Parents/guardians will be requested to include their email address and a telephone number so PE Central can contact them. We will take reasonable steps to verify parent/guardian identity before granting them access to their child's information. We also encourage parents/guardians to speak with the teacher if their child was registered by their teacher at their school.
