Purpose FAQ

Registration is closed for the 2007 Coleman Everest 5.5 Challenge . Good luck to all of our participants! Remember to check back next year, when Coleman will have another similar challenge for school kids. The information below is for information only and is only relevant for the 2007 Challenge.

2007 Coleman Everest 5.5 Challenge Description/Features

Site Description and Purpose

The purpose of the 2007 Coleman Everest 5.5 Challenge Web site is to motivate children and adolescents (upper elementary, middle, and high school aged kids) to become physically active by providing them with a fun and educational Web site that encourages them to record and track their physical activity in minutes and/or steps while striving to virtually reach the Summit of Mount Everest. The Challenge, named for the height of Mount Everest in miles, will coincide with 8th grade science teacher Mike Haugen's actual climb to the summit of the world's highest peak. Students, in addition to their virtual hike, will also see video and e-mail reports of Mike's actual Everest expedition. The site will also showcase a Question of the Day for kids who are registered. All of the questions will be provided up front so students can study ahead of time to get the correct answer when each question is presented. The questions will be about Mount Everest and the surrounding area. Students are really going to enjoy this!

With this 30-day Challenge, Coleman is motivating kids to get outside and recreate more. Students have 30 days to complete 20 segments. Each segment is completed when a child reports being active at least 60 minutes (or 10,000 steps) for that day. Upon completing a segment, students can track their progress on a map up to the base of the mountain (15 segments) and up to the summit (5 segments) of Mount Everest.

The Coleman Everest 5.5 Challenge recognizes those who participate to the highest extent. All students and individuals who complete the Challenge and reach the summit will be able to print a congratulatory personalized certificate commemorating their achievement.

In addition, the most physically active schools (of those with 50 or more students registered for the Challenge) will be identified by dividing the total number of students at the school who are registered for the Challenge by the number who complete the entire Everest hike. Coleman will provide a souvenir from Mike’s Everest Expedition to all schools with 100 percent participation-to-completion ratios and – while supplies last – to other top schools in order of completion results.

As an added incentive, Coleman will send a $50 gift card redeemable at Coleman.com to the first 55 teachers to sign up, register their school and have at least 10 students complete the student registration.

  • Choose from a large list of physical activities for which they can log minutes or steps.
  • Learn more about Everest and the hike by answering a question of the day.
  • View and print a certificate of achievement upon reaching the summit of Mount Everest (20 out of the 30 days being active at least 60 minutes or 10,000 steps).

Limitations of the 2007 Coleman Everest 5.5 Challenge Web site

  • It is only a 30-day hike, so the site will come down on May 11, 2007.
  • Only students who record either 60 physical activity minutes or 10,000 steps (or a combination of the two) can earn a segment to move toward reaching the summit of Mount Everest.
  • Students cannot enter unlimited number of miles or steps per day. The cap is set at 120 activity minutes/20,000 steps per day. This is done to alleviate cheating.
  • The list of physical activities for which a child can record minutes or steps is limited to the list that is available. No one can add to this list.
  • Students can only enter minutes or steps up to 3 days prior. However teachers can enter up to 30 days prior so if a student misses a day, or days, the teacher can enter the minutes, or steps, for a student.
  • For schools to be eligible for recognition as one of the most active schools, they must have at least 50 student registrants.

Important Dates/Timeline

  • Wednesday, March 14, 2007 : Registration opens for teachers; students can register after a teacher at their school has registered the school.
  • Monday, April 9, 2007 : The virtual hike begins. Students can begin logging their physical activity. Teachers will have access to all of the tools they have to manage and edit their student and school information.
  • Thursday, April 19, 2007 : Registration for everyone is closed. Teachers can't register any new students either.
  • Friday, May 11, 2007 : 30-day hike site is closed down and the top schools will be announced on the site shortly thereafter.

Choosing the most physically active schools

  • Schools must have at least 50 students registered to qualify for this honor.
  • This will be determined by total number of students who enter at the school divided by the number of kids who reach the top of the mountain. For example, if a school has 30 students registered and all 30 reach they would have a 100% rating. If a school has 750 students register and 452 complete the hike then they would have a 60% success rate and would be ranked accordingly. The top schools receive a souvenir from Mike’s expedition.
  • Top schools will be announced on the site by May 16.

Teacher registration incentive

  • Coleman will send the first 55 teachers to sign up, register their school and have at least 10 students complete the student registration a $50 gift card redeemable at Coleman.com. Coleman will mail the gift card to the teachers using their name and school addresses.

List of Physical Activities

The following are the only activities that students can record during the 30-day Challenge Hike (PDF). Activities cannot be added to. This is the final list.
